Using Space to Sell a Home

For those of you seeking to sell your home, this article offers some good advice to make the process a little easier, in spite of the bad math (40% + 20% + 20% = 100% ?).

The truth is, emptiness makes a home look more appealing to buyers. If a bookshelf (to consider the article’s example) is filled with books, buyer psychology suggests that the home features less space for the new residents’ possessions. You have to remember, when you sell a home, human beings are not the only things moving in – all of their stuff will come too!

So, make it look like they have space to fit their things into. Of course, this means finding somewhere for your possessions. You have several options for this. If you have space in your basement or attic, start to pack various items and put the boxes in these areas (out of the buyers’ initial sight). If you have nearby relatives or friends, ask if you can store some things at their house before you move. Lastly, consider a storage facility, which may become especially handy during your upcoming move (especially if you move your things to a storage facility in or near your new home).

The key is: make space. Invite buyers in and let them feel that they have room to relax and spread out. This increases the psychological value of your home, which is a too often overlooked aspect of home selling.
