How To Keep Pests Out of Your New Home

Pest Control So you’ve just moved into a new home in Edmonton, Alberta. Everything is unpacked and right where you want it and the place is looking beautiful. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see a small black dot creeping across the floor. Then another. And another, and another after that. You’ve got pests!

Here are a few ways to prevent this nightmare by keeping your new home pest free from the start.

Keep the Place Clean

The first thing you should do after moving into a new home is clean it thoroughly. Then, make sure to keep it that way. In addition to regular floor cleanings, tackle every spill with soap and water as soon as it happens. Stay on top of the dishes and take out the trash every day, without exception. Isn’t it nice to live in a sparkling clean house anyway?

Store Food Properly

The problem with most pests is how tiny they are. Even if you think you’ve rolled up that bag of food, they can still find they’re way in. Everything that pests might be hungry for—like seeds and grains—should be stored in an airtight container. Instead of leaving fruit out on the counter, throw it in the refrigerator.

Don’t Let It Get Wet

We need water to live, and we use water in our homes to perform many daily tasks. But guess who else is attracted to moisture? That’s right: pests. Soak up any leaks or spills, and make sure that your bathroom is properly ventilated so that it dries up quickly. Otherwise, you could have a friend waiting for you next time you hop in the shower.

Mind Your Pets

People love their pets. That’s why they’re such a sneaky way for pests to find their way inside your house. Fleas and ticks are the most common culprit, both mostly invisible to the naked eye. If your dog or cat is acting strange, have them checked. Wash and brush them daily, especially if they spend a lot of time outdoors.

Guard All Entry Points

They can’t get in if you don’t let them, right? Seal all holes and cracks in the exterior and interior of your home to block the path inside. Also, try to give pests less incentive to approach your home in the first place. Avoid stacking things like wood against your home, and keep gutters and surrounding areas free of leaves and other debris.

If you think you might have an issue with pests in your new home, it’s best to call a local exterminator and have it examined and dealt with by a professional. If Edmonton Real Estate expertise is what you’re looking for, look no further than Alex Hlady.
